96% IDA will produce a good polish, but if you wish to buy industrial denatured alcohol above 96% then you need to obtain (free of charge) an authorisation letter from Revenue and Customs which permits you to purchase it. You can download the application form here (paragraph 19) , or call them on 0845 010 9000 and they will send you a registration letter. It does not take long and there is no cost involved.   Common purple meths 90 to 94 % from hardware shops is not pure enough to make good French polish.)
